Governors

The Thomas Johnson Lower School Governing Body provides strategic leadership to the school and holds the leadership to account by monitoring school performance.

Key roles are:

  • To ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • To hold the Head Teacher/Senior Leadership Team to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performancemanagement of staff;
  • To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.

Other duties include:

  • To determine how the school’s budget is spent
  • To ensure that all children, including those with special educational needs, have access to a broad and balanced curriculum;
  • To hear appeals and grievances
  • Shaping policy on the school’s curriculum
  • Setting standards for children’s behaviour and discipline
  • Making sure school buildings are welcoming and safe
  • Setting and monitoring the school’s aims and policies

The governing body meets once every term and considers comprehensive reports from the Head Teacher covering the performance of pupils, strategic issues, policy review, budget considerations, safeguarding and welfare.

The Finance committee reviews the financial reports for the school and also meets every term.

The governing body consists of ‘parent’, ‘staff’ and ‘co-opted’ governors who are appointed on the basis of skills or experience. The governing body bring a range of expertise and are committed to ensuring the very best educational outcome to the pupils of Thomas Johnson Lower School.
